A belated post from one who attended the game, but has just got back from a wet week in the lake district.
Town were by far the better team on the night, Workington playing a stream of long balls to their big man hoping for a flick on etc. We were stood in the middle of Workington fans, who were fed up with their teams style of play, and made numerous comments after we equalised that there was only going to be one winner, and it wasn't going to be them. Conditions were driving rain and wind running across the pitch yet we played some excellent football through midfield. We looked comfortable in possession and there wasn't a weak link out there. Woodhouse played some excellent first time through balls, and we nearly sneaked it at the end when a shot on target was deflected behind and we had two corners in succession before the final whistle.
As the game wore on, their big man became more and more isolated to the point where it looked at times like they were playing one up front.
If I was being ultra picky, it would be great if we had a bigger physical presence up front sometimes, but as I saw with Workington, a big target man can mean that the back four do nothing other than hoof it everytime they have it and decent defenders gobble up possession.
I must say that I came away feeling proud of the way the lads played, and having gone a goal down, I suppose at that stage I would have taken a point.
