    Halifax or bust!

Post by Surplus on Tue Oct 11, 2016 4:04 pm

Really looking forward to this. Proper knockout cup game which will hopefully draw a massive crowd. Would've thought that Halifax will try a different strategy than long balls for Denton to knockdown and be interesting to see if they make the best of the 3G surface!

I reckon if it could be bust AND a full house, then both clubs would think the outcome was ace !

    Why "bust"?
We will not win the FA Cup but we still have the play offs to fight for.

Yep, hopefully bust for Halifax and were in the next round. Should be a cracking game, definitely getting there early as can see queues!

'Bust' as in proper cup and derby game with 1 chance to win ( yes I know it can go to replay but just ramping up the tension and sense of occasion)

Looking forward to this one. Hopefully have a strong side out and put on a performance. This cup game has bought us a bit of time to get some injured players back hopefully!

Think we'll get around 1500 to 1800 through the gate so need a good performance tomorrow. Hopefully no more injuries and we don't need a replay.

Agreed. Although a big game today and a money spinner with bragging rights hanging off it, still need to keep next weekend in focus!

To me the game is evenly balanced today. If we won it would be a boost to the optimists about how we'll do this season !

By the end of 90 mins it wasnt evenly balanced. Just thankful it wasnt a league game and we didnt lose 3 pts. Fylde ground it out and the teams around us are all looking menacing. Just wish we'd put on a show, don't mind losing but not like that.

Just some words from a happy Shayman-

Magnificent performance today from every player to a man.

Made Harrogate look very ordinary. Superb defence i cant remember a Harrogate shot on target.

Glad i made the trip with the 700 others. Any one at home in next round.

Well done lads, pleasure to pay and watch that type of performance.

The better team on the day won. Calamity Crook finished the game for me. It's almost every week he commits a serious error of judgment. We went back to long punts upfield again to people who cannot head the ball. WHY???   Pittman seems to be injury prone. We need better upfront if we are to be there at the end of the season. We need a left back. Bring back Swain !
Thankfully we don't go to Halifax on Tues for a replay.
The crowd was well above the 1781 anounced. We need a weeks rest and some fit players for Fylde on Saturday.

Presume they weren't counting the army lads. Well behaved and nice to see them. Just need to scale up to accomodate them all but wish we'd put on a decent show for them!

If our ground can accommodate 3800 I believe  then we need twice today's attendance to fill it. We would not get twice today's attendance in.

Without doubt the better team won today, we were awful, I was hoping for me weaver to hold his hands up and say " I got it wrong it's my fault" wishful thinking I know, but to blame it on injurys! When only JP got injured and he wasn't 100% before the game and bad luck!!! And then to carry on and say yout only as strong as your forward line and we were lacking in that today, when we played for 60 minutes without a forward on the pitch and we had 2 on the bench he didn't want to use! I'm sorry but F**k off, we've just exited our biggest game of the season at a whimper at best,
We were shambolic today and everyone that was in attendance knows it, thank god for the 20-30 Halifax 13yr olds behaving like imbeciles to keep us entertained second half!

Wow what the heck was Simon doing today? Once again we get a large crowd and we choke...I heard a group of guys walking out saying that this is why they don't watch town that often, and in my head I was screaming " if only you had seen us smash FC United".

I just don't get the striker thing, Leesley was absolute garbage up front on his own but then the supply would have sailed over Denton's head. Why play players out of position? I would rather see a slightly demoralized, unfit Chib put his weight around up top rather than a winger who looked lost. God knows what Chib thinks of the situation. Then I hear Ellis wasn't playing because he has a blister - a flaming blister, what is that all about?

Credit to Halifax for closing us down quick but we set our stalls out with that mis placed pass in the first minute that gifted them a corner. I also didn't get Weaver saying Thanoj is the best playmaker in the league today in his post match interview, do my eyes deceive me?

I predict that we will slowly leave the playoff places but it is ok since the whole of the squad is injured!

As many were singing in the second half, "this is embarrassing". Summed it up perfectly on a few fronts.
Embarrassed on the touchline, we put arguably our best player out of position up front when we have two forwards on the bench. Is Weaver genuinely trying to make sure Chib leaves the game of football; he has and is screwing his confidence.
The tactics were questionable to say they least. They hardly said I want me and the team to banish the line of big game let downs. Our biggest marketing tool and we flush it down the bog with that performance.

Which led to, embarrassment on the pitch. Did we have a shot on target all match? Fair does losing to Halifax, they are an ok side but we went out there and showed nothing. You don't mind losing but like that was not good at all. No passing, no craft no guile and no fluidity. Was inept stuff, to the point where the only entertainment was the Halifax cast of Kes the stage show for us in the KOP. Don't mind losing when we have had a go but that we were anonymous throughout - which in a game of this size (for us lot at least in the stands) - is not acceptable surely?!

It was also an embarrassment off the pitch too. The queue shows once again that the club off the pitch is not set up to cater for the club to progress further than a rich bloke’s club to further his kids career. We struggle when we get 700 on the gates and nothing has been resolved despite it being raised many times last season. Once again the simple aspects of running a football club pass us by.
Do Ged and Plant pot really think it makes a good impression on new or once a season visitors that you have to queue round the block and then despite a 10 mins delay hundreds were still left missing 10-15mins of the game.

A commercial embarrassment to see a huge queue at a burger wagon used as the principle refreshments offering to again many fans who are sampling town for the first time.

And why have the 1919 shut at half time? Are we not allowed access to the bar at any big game now? Why? It takes the piss out of the great work Hamil and Trish do that again one really positive side of town new fans don't get to experience. It’s like a Daily Mail attitude towards fans that we cannot be trusted so just shut the bar - yet again. It is clear these decisions are made from a lack of experience and understanding of football supporting and fans - then again when your experience of the game is spent with schools and the MD 'doesn't do away games' what do we expect.

Oh and the final embarrassment - the attendance announced. Could have been the only positive of the match, the superb turn out by Football fans in Harrogate. Yet they BS the attendance. As Garage says - does anyone with a shred of intelligence really think another 1700 could fit into the ground?? Even with the army lads (a great set of lads) not being counted - they are having a laugh. A laugh similar to the other BS that emanates from Wetherby Road on occasions to cover up the fact that certain people ain't got a chuffing clue how to run a football club. Make it up as you go along. Thankfully it is apparent to many, must be apparent to Irving if he really wants the club to be self-sufficient away from the ambitions of his son and his tenure if Simon does move on career wise. Go on club, have a stab at explaining why 1000 or so fans went missing from the crowd announced??

Hope Danny Ellis's blister, nae calf strain, nae argument with Simon, gets better soon or we are fecked. I fear that the next month or so will really show up that we are once again a very well paid and funded squad (top 3 surely, given the nigh on full time status of the first team now) that lack the ability to really push on. A team that is made up of top earners in this division (away from Fyldes 20k a week budget) and transfer fee paid signings that lacks the spirit and guile to really kick on when the going gets serious. Hence the big match failures.

We must now be the only club in the league without a club shop on match days now it's been shut down. Assuming the club wants everyone to buy online now but there's still loads of elderly fans not on line.

The biggest mistake I made on Saturday was not leaving the ground at 3.10 pm. I was really enjoying it until then: the anticipation, the crowds, the atmosphere inside the ground, this really felt special. Then the match started. Others have summed it up better than I could, but it is SO frustrating to yet again tank in front of a big crowd (how often has that happened?). There must have been at least 400 hundred new or newish potential Town fans in there, how many will come back?

As others have said, losing is one thing (goes with the territory), but to lose in such an abject manner is almost unforgivable.. Halifax certainly deserved to win, but they were not that good.

I am feeling increasingly angry about the treatment of Chib. I mean if Simon was never going to play him, why sign him at all? PR? Even if he is not match fit (hardly surprising!), he should have come on, his strength and power might have got us a goal. Lets face it, the other 10 could still be playing now and Drench still wouldn't have had a shot to save. Chib is a great guy and a Town legend, he deserves better.

I have been thinking about this attendance business ever since the match (well, I don't have much else to do), and it gets more puzzling. Either the club are right and there were about 1900 there (allowing for some freebies) or the capacity of 3800 is absurdly incorrect. I would have thought you could have, just about, squeezed another 500 in there on Saturday, but no more. It would be nice to get an explanation.

Apart from that the other posters all have it about right!

Hadn’t realised about the club shop – wasn’t announced anywhere was it?

Yet shouldn’t surprise us. The online offer is a joke as it is and has been that way despite boy wonders presence and promises at the club to change things. Badly stocked, badly presented and as you say, doesn’t allow for many people who neither are able to nor want to shop online. If there was any understanding of the commercial basics at the club you need both online and bricks and mortar to generate spend and, at a football club, brand growth.

Now as our only commercial offering on this front it follows a continuation of theme of decisions made. There’s a fecking reason why clubs have a club shop…….#footballclubbasics

Still we have an link for new fans so they now how to enter a football ground. So things are looking up.

Ah was bloody brilliant seeing the buzz pre and first bit of the game. A testament to the investment Irving Weaver has made and the development this cash has had on the club. Just a shame that a lot of quick wins in the broader, day to day approach seem nigh on impossible and at times lack any football or commercial sense for the average town fan on the terrace.

Wonder if the club will have to sort something out with Halifax - as we give half the receipts I think - as their lot have been questioning it too. Was around 3000 at the Leeds friendly summer before so maybe for a couple of hundred/500 max or so extra that evening from the look of the stands etc so wasn't much difference it seemed. Certainly not 1200!

I believe the crowd of 1800 looked about right. I'm guessing the wetherby road stand holds about 1700 - there were supposedly 700 away fans (also, away fan numbers usually get exaggerated) so that's 1000 free spaces. I was in the new stand which, in some areas was nowhere near packed so if that holds say 1200, then you'd have got 300 more in. So throw into the equation the usual freebies and the army freebies - say 300, and assume you could have fitted another say 100 on the south and east ends, the you have about 1700 spare unaccounted in the paying crowd figure. Seems about right to me. QED.
Even more reason to be annoyed that I was queueing to get in at the 'hospital' road side for 30 minutes when people seemed to be walking along wetherby road, ignoring or jumping the queue and getting straight in. I'll be going through the away turnstile next time there's a segregated and big (but not that big a) crowd.

I imagine the referee's report will have something unfavourable to say about the need for a late kick off. We really must have a third turnstile at the north entrance if the present segregation arrangements are to continue. If my experience at the turnstile is anything to go by it wasn't very efficient. I asked for a senior concession (£8) and a child(£3) handing over two five pound notes and a one pound coin. The gateman queried my granddaughter's age (she is and looks ten), put the notes into a pot, had a conversation with his colleague, then asked me how much I had given him and insisted on handing back the £1 he was still holding!
