The future of Blue Square North new boys Ilkeston Town looks uncertain following local newspaper reports that owner, Chek Whyte, has debts of over £30m.
Reports surfaced on Friday morning that property tycoon Whyte, who appeared on Channel 4 programme ‘The Secret Millionaire’, owes £25m to various banks while unsecured trade creditors are owed just under £5m. It is also believed Whyte owes HM Revenue & Customs £2.5m.
Chek Whyte took control of the Robins just over a year ago following the death of long time chairman and supporter Paul Millership. Whyte promised to set up a football academy with the aim of getting local youngsters off the streets, however last month the club scrapped both the reserve and the under-19 teams.
Supporters have been using Ilkeston’s internet message boards requesting answers from the club however nothing has been released by the board of directors. In the early hours of Saturday morning a banner was tied to the railings outside the New Manor Ground.
On Monday evening Ilkeston chairman and long time friend of Chek Whyte, Dennis Harris, is due to appear at the club to organize lost season tickets. It is unclear whether this will still take place after a number of supporters announced they will be asking questions to the chairman about the future of the club.
Ilkeston, under new manager Kevin Wilson, start life in the Blue Square North with a trip to Droylsden on Saturday, 8th August.
