Future of Railway? Empty Future of Railway?

Post by paulstreet Fri Feb 10, 2017 11:55 am

Anyone any thoughts on the (fairly) dramatic news from Station View. Selling their ground for 6 million, and thus being (presumably) homeless. Ground share with us maybe? Bearing in mind that Bill couldn't find a new ground, and the rugby club took years to move, their chances of finding a new ground would seem to be slim. Love to hear some thoughts on this.

They are rivals, yes - but it's not good for the local community, the town and non - league football to see a club in trouble. I hope that somehow a solution can be found. Presumably we'd want to help in some way if we could?

Can't think of many places you could set a new build community football up in around starbeck! Selling half of it and investing in total upgrade and 3G pitch would help revenue streams but surely railway run the risk of the cupboard being bare again in the near future? What happened to all the money from the previous sell off ?

And those cup runs, TV money and all. Could have used all that to kick on, but on the pitch nothing seemed to happen. Strange.

Unless someone has got something up a sleeve, surely if they sell the entire ground for development then they will just go under. Only got to look at Worcester for proof of how hard it is to survive without a ground. Plus all the money that went into the new clubhouse down the pan.

It always seemed odd to me that they built that new club house but did virtually nothing with the ground. Just that absurd new stand built between the dug outs so you can't actually see the pitch properly! Its hard to feel sorry for them really.

Given that they are only 3 miles and a few league places apart how about an arrangement with Knaresborough Town? Railway will need the use of a ground and I imagine Knaresborough could do with some of their funds to develop it.

With the money railway would have, it'd be more like a takeover. Possible make sense if games could be coordinated. Granby site would be challenging due to proximity to us and also distance from their current area

I attended the meeting at Railway a week last Sunday.

I've been told the option to remain and only sell the 2nd pitch is not viable.  The club has to move.

I understand they would be looking to set up down Claro Road near the new Tennis Club/Granby School with a ground and indoor sports facility.

Northfield is a property director and is only interested in the land. He tried to sell Guiseleys ground a few years ago.
To say that only selling half the ground is not viable is a total nonsence.
Railway's members need to be very careful here or they could find themselves going out of existence.

Did Rob Northfield give any indication of a timeframe? Presumably getting planning permission won't be easy (unless he has received assurances already!). even when that is granted you are presumably talking a couple (maybe 3) years before moving in. Will Railway stay at Station View until then? Or will they have to find temporary accommodation?

Just read the last couple of posts, re: the members apparent lack of interest. It has sometimes seemed to me(admittedly as a complete outsider), that the football part of the club has never seemed of great importance to the members. The ground looks uncared for, and, as I said, the golden opportunity of two (two!) FA cup runs seems to have been thrown away.

I asked about planning permission & Rob Northfield confirmed enquiries had been made but he was otherwise non-committal.

No indication given about time frame although should be clear soon. I seem to recall that one of the development options allowed for a handover period of 3 years although can't recall which of them it was in relation to.

Unfortunately in my experience football has always been secondary and whilst they have received money in the past such as from the building of the care home and the FA Cup runs, I understand it hasn't been used very wisely. This is why they are where they are.

It's a risky game their playing. To relocate at Claro would involve railway home fans pretty much travelling past the CNG if they're coming from starbeck area. Sounds like it's all about the money unless they can get grants to put in a 3G at Granby. Then there is direct competition to our business model on a number of fronts!

Please excuse my brevity as I'm posting from my phone.

Rob Northfield was invited back to the club because the club needed his help, and as is evident he accepted, to my mind other than investing both thousands in Harrogate Railway in the last year and his time he won't benefit financially at all from this deal as he doesn't own the club or the land. As with Guiseley the land was I believe owned by the council and so couldn't have been profited from even if he'd tried (which he did not as the land was owned by the council and so couldn't have been profited from even if he'd tried)

It would appear to me that if you're so unhappy at the club you should leave as the "team mentality" you've displayed is probably not what they require. They might have that chat with you I don't know. It certainly puts me off going to see the Ladies team if they essentially advocate through inaction ; this incident.

I think it's an emotive subject and everyone is entitled to an opinion, especially those with a connection to railway. From an outside perspective there are a number of issues such as previous monies, lack of a viable financial model and level of engagement. This is the last bit of silverware railway have in the cupboard. Sell the ground, better hope an option comes up as the rugby club struggled to get anywhere for ages and nearly became homeless.

You can be emotional and still make sense, I agree they seem to be in a right mess. I always found it a really depressing place to visit, had the feel of decay about it, as though no one really cared. Sad.

GaryHost - My opinion is my own and I'm entitled to it. I never said it reflected the attitude of the team. The ladies have been very successful in recent years on the pitch and do a lot to support Railway in terms of charity events, helping out at games & putting plenty of money behind the bar. I would therefore be surprised if anyone wants to "have a chat" as you put it.  I am though happy to discuss matters further with you if you want to come and watch us.  We don't get as many fans as Town so all support is welcome.

It is an emotive subject as I've been involved with Railway for a number of years.

Also I think it's important to note that of all the members who attended the meeting, it was the ladies team who asked the most questions and showed the most passion for the club. We want the club to keep going.
