So long and thanks for the memories! Empty So long and thanks for the memories!

Post by Big Red Machine Thu Jul 02, 2015 2:45 pm

    Hi all,

Finally free from the shackles I can now come onto this forum again!

Over the weekend I handed in my notice at the club as my position as Press Officer had become untenable.

I would like to thank all the fans who went out of their way to come up to me before, during and after matches to talk about the programme and website, your opinions and ideas were always important to me. Also many thanks to those who had kind words to say about the programme and website, they were always appreciated.

I leave sad but with many wonderful memories during my eight years, in various roles, at the club. My highlights were:

Setting up the club website and watching it grow.
Winning the Harrogate Business best website award in 2013
Producing the 2nd round FA Cup fully glossy programme for the Hasting's game.

I wish the team nothing but the best of luck this season and I hope that the fans also get the success that they deserve - you are an amazingly loyal bunch and that is something that no-one can take away from you all.

I will still be involved in football over at Wetherby Athletic but for anything that appears from Harrogate Town from 1st July onwards, it's not me doing it!!

Again, many thanks and take care everyone.

    Pete

Best wishes, Peter. Excellent programme by the way.

The new season has not yet begun and the club's press officer has already felt the need to resign. Yikes!

I was very surprised by this news, but I do have my suspicions as to why his position became untenable.

If it is what I think it is. Then it is obvious to me that the main people within the club are nothing but a bunch of control freaks.

I could be totally wrong in my assumption, but I could also be correct. Time will tell.

It's an absolute shame he has left, but his loss is definitely Wetherby Athletic's gain.

Very sad news indeed. Brilliant website, excellent programme, great photographs...a great loss to the club in many ways. Thanks for everything Peter. Certainly the use of the word 'untenable' suggests something has happened with 'the powers that be'. Maybe one day we will find out.

Bad time to happen, the club have got a month to find 1) a Press Officer (who does what he is told!), 2) a Programme Editor 3) an Official Photographer 4) a Web Manager Good luck with that.

Am I the only one with a sinking feeling 'a certain person' might fulfill some of these roles?

You would guess so. I just wont bother reading the match reports on the website in future as they will all be biased. And now that Peter has gone, the website will go downhill and become poor. Ruining all of Peter's hard work, dedication and long hours in the process. But the money men at the club don't give a ****.

This is a big, big mistake by the club, on a par with letting Walshaw go, and this is definitely one that will come back to bite them, in a big way.

We have already seen evidence of this, very spartan coverage of Ryan's injury and just the first 5 fixtures listed, with no comment, talk about building up the excitement! Peter would really have given these stories much greater prominence and much greater interest. And to think we had probably the best website in our league. Sad.

Don't know who is doing the website now, but the font is way too big and the texts are terrible. Look like they have been written by a seven-year-old.

The club have done a lot of good things off the pitch in recent times, but losing Peter Arnett was not one of them. The web site has gone down hill rapidly, still nothing in the News section about Friday's game (the report is elsewhere and from an outside source), which seems extraordinary, given how much they had pumped it up beforehand. Peter would already be telling us about the Cleethorpes game (nothing about that either). They need to appoint a specialist webmaster rapidly, or all the good work that Peter achieved will be lost.

Anyone else notice 'a certain person' walking round on Friday with Press Officer emblazoned on his back? Oh dear.

Sad news about Brian Russell as well.

Is it who we think it is? If so, it's like replacing Sergio Aguero with Will Turl (Anyone remember him?)

It's not hard to guess at the reasons behind Peter stepping down. The website is already becoming a bit of a joke - apart from some really poor grammar, it's generally lacking a bit of class making it pretty obvious who's now responsible for providing updates etc. In particular the reference to Brian Russell which is supported with an old team photo rather than a photo of Brian himself just seems a bit disrespectful - surely wouldn't have been difficult to source an individual photo.

Just reminds me about everything I really don't like about this club these days ...sorry state of affairs.

First of all, many, many thanks for all the kind words, they are greatly appreciated.

I would like to add my sympathies over Mr Russell, always a gentleman who had time for everyone and was Harrogate Town through and through. A very sad day.

I am very glad that the team pulled off a decent result against Leeds, like I said, I wish them and certain people nothing but the best.

Paul, I'm afraid that I can do nothing to alleviate your fears re the press officer post.

I spent a very enjoyable Saturday at the i2i Stadium watch our former manager, Neil Aspin, guide his FC Halifax Team to a 2-0 win over Tadcaster Albion, who contained a few familiar faces.

Tadcaster and FC Halifax have both taken receipt of my photos and will hopefully be displaying them soon, but some are available to view/buy at my website - [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Keep fighting the fight guys and never stop signing!

    All the best,

Just look at the layout for the last few updates on the website. It is a disgrace. Whoever is responsible for these, should be sacked. It makes the club look thoroughly unprofessional.

First impressions count. If the website looks professional, then people will think we are professional. If it looks like we've hired a 10 yr old to cut and paste, it's going to look ****, which gives off the opinion that we are unprofessional.

Just sack the ****** idiot who is doing this, because they are inadvertently dragging the club down.

There is a new website on its way, will be launched very soon. Should make for a better look and feel and easier for the content to look consistent.

So, what is the problem with the current website? That seems easy enough to get around. It just needs someone who knows what they are doing.

It only seems to be since Peter Arnett has left, it's gone to ratshit.

From what I gather the old website was a little bespoke, complex to outsiders unless you created it and understand the coding...The new website is been built on a platform that makes it easier to make and also why do you think the club shop was poor? Because it was hard to implement.

Yes, I probably would have done a better job than the recent person that had taken it over. The issues that exist wouldn't have been hard to resolve. But no-one has asked me, plus the opportunity was never presented to me because they always had someone in mind to take over anyway.

I've never had a problem with the website and I've always managed to get around it quick enough.

Wasn't the website up for some award previously, or even won it not so long ago?

yeah but you are not grasping what I am saying....the old website was built on an old platform which is now like you driving a rusty old banger...It is not the navigation it is the "making changes" to it that is the problem to anyone except Pete...Pete knows how it was built has worked with the coding for years so for someone, even with mass website experience would struggle with it.....Hence why the club have had to shell out quickly because noone could fathem the build...Din't help that Pete made it difficult by deleting a few bits and changing the settings.

So i think in this instance you are been a wee bit unfair with your comments, at least give it a bit of time.

I am grasping what you are saying. My point is, the issues would have not been hard to resolve with a bit of time, effort and patience. If the club would rather spend money developing a shiny new website for the new incumbent to play with, then so be it.

I can fathom a sensible guess why he left, but if it has transpired that he has deleted settings, and changed a few bits due to this reason, then it is bang out of order and unprofessional. But from my experience, anyone with a bit of knowhow could have changed the settings.

I'm sure the new website will prove to be a success, but time will tell.
